Henry Ford employed many people in the 1930s and 1940s in lettuce fields. Ford initially moved to Richmond Hill to build a winter home and to experiment with rubber-producing plants. After much trial and error, he found that iceberg lettuce grew very well in the reclaimed antebellum rice fields. This label was on each lettuce crate used for shipping.
